Mesopotamia was said to be the first human civilization on earth. It got its name from the Greek, it means "the land between rivers." Mesopotamia was located in modern day Iraq between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Mesopotamian people believed that everything in the world was controlled by gods. They even believed that there was a bread god. Besides gods there were also monsters and demons, which were not the same thing. Demons were created by the gods and good be either good or evil. Demons had human bodies and animal or bird heads. The monsters were a mixture of animals and birds. Here is some pictures of these gods....
There were over 3,000 gods who were responsible for everything in the world like pottery, trees, bread, rivers, etc.
Each city was protected by its own god or goddess and their family. Large temples were built in the center of the city for the gods to live in. People could made offerings to the gods in smaller temples. Priests looked after gods with special rituals. Mesopotamia was the home of some of the oldest major ancient civilizations, like the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians.
